New GGIN policy briefs have been published
The Global Governance Innovation Network has launched two new policy briefs focusing on global economic governance and UN reforms in response to complex crises.
Global Economic Governance: UN-G20+ Collaboration
The policy brief Biennial UN-G20+ Summit: Bridging the Global Economy Governance Gap responds to ongoing global financial instability, rising inequality, and the environmental crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. It proposes a Biennial UN-G20+ Summit on the Global Economy, bringing together the G20, UN Member States, regional organizations, and heads of key international financial institutions to address these interconnected challenges.
The summit would convene during the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week to focus on mitigating cross-border shocks, promoting a broad-based socioeconomic recovery from the pandemic, and addressing global economic inequality. By fostering deeper cooperation between the UN and G20, this proposal aims to strengthen global financial, economic, social, and environmental governance and build a more sustainable and resilient global economy.
Reforming UN Response to Global Shocks
The policy brief “Complex Global Shocks, Emergency Platforms, and United Nations Reform” addresses how recent global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have exposed the UN’s structural challenges in responding effectively.
It explores the concept of a new “Emergency Platform” (EP), proposed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Our Common Agenda. This platform would enable faster and more coordinated responses to global shocks by pooling resources and involving a wider range of actors beyond Member States and UN agencies.
The policy brief also examines ongoing debates surrounding the platform, including questions of authority, resource allocation, and multilateral cooperation. It highlights the challenges ahead for its successful implementation as part of the Pact for the Future in 2024.
