Reform the WTO and make better use of G20 and other similar organisations. That is two of many policy recommendations from a Global Policy Dialogue meeting held in Brazil. Host of the meeting was the think tank Plataforma CIPÓ. The report from the meeting summarises ideas and suggestions generated at the meeting. Attended did a select, yet diverse group from the UN Secretariat, think tanks, academia, the private sector, international organisations, and other civil society groups.

Policy recommendations from the meeting include:

    • Making use of the consecutive presidencies of the G20 by developing nations (India, Brazil, and South Africa) to enhance the synergies between the G20, Bretton Woods Institutions, and other key global governance structures.

    • Reforming the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Bretton Woods Institutions to boost their ability to regulate and enforce strict social-environmental criteria in trade and finance flows.

The discussion revolved around four themes:

  • Just transition and sustainable development
  • Trade; Balancing the COP agenda
  • Climate adaptation and loss and damage
  • Climate, gender, and human rights
  • Biodiversity and climate governance

The Global Policy Dialogue meetings examine evidence-based solutions for intensifying global challenges, with the Global Challenges Foundation providing support. The host of the latest meeting was Plataforma CIPÓ.
