GCF Heads to New York for the “Summit of the Future”
In September 2024, leaders worldwide will gather at the United Nations for the “Summit of the Future.” This important event aims to create a new global consensus on improving the present and protecting the future.
As the Summit approaches, we spoke with Anja Olin-Pape, Head of Multilateral Strategies at Global Challenges Foundation. Anja has been deeply involved in preparing for this pivotal event. She shares insights into GCF’s role, her expectations for the Summit, and what she looks forward to the most.
Global Challenges Foundation’s Preparations for the Summit
Interviewer: How has the Foundation been involved with the Summit of the Future approaching?
Anja Olin-Pape: The Foundation has been actively involved in this process since 2020. Our primary role has been supporting various initiatives to promote the conference’s objectives. As a funding organization, we have focused on financing projects that encourage civil society engagement and foster discussions among member states on key issues related to the Summit.
We have also worked closely with the UN system, particularly the Secretary-General’s office, to ensure this Summit is not just another meeting but a meaningful step forward.
Throughout this process, we’ve been fortunate to collaborate with some incredible partners—organizations and individuals who are deeply committed to these issues and have worked tirelessly to bring these vital discussions to the forefront.

Expectations and Hopes for the Summit
Interviewer: What are your hopes and expectations for the Summit of the Future?
Anja Olin-Pape: I entered this process with great optimism, but recent global events have dampened some of my expectations. The world’s geopolitical situation is tense, and competition still overshadows cooperation. Nonetheless, I hope the Summit will unite those who want to advance the global agenda.
I hope it will be a platform for meaningful action rather than just producing more declarations. We have invested significant time in building coalitions, devising strategies, and forming alliances that can drive progress even after the Summit ends.
What is the Summit of the Future?
The Summit of the Future is a high-level event where world leaders will forge a new international consensus to deliver a better present and safeguard the future. This unique opportunity aims to restore trust and show that international cooperation can effectively tackle both current and emerging global challenges.
Key Outcomes: What to Expect
Interviewer: What are the most important outcomes of the Summit?
Anja Olin-Pape: One of the key outcomes we anticipate is the adoption of the Pact for the Future, which will outline what the UN must do to address the challenges of the 21st century. This will involve strengthening ongoing initiatives, improving climate and environmental work, and advancing peace and security efforts.
Another significant outcome is the Declaration on Future Generations. This document is fascinating because it recognizes the responsibility we have not only across borders but also across generations. Our decisions today will impact the world for decades, so we must consider the long-term effects of our actions.
Looking Ahead: Personal Reflections
Interviewer: What are you personally looking forward to the most at the Summit?
Anja Olin-Pape: In this line of work, it’s rare to reach a point where you can check off milestones and say, “We did it.” So, just getting to this point feels like a significant achievement.
But more than that, I’m looking forward to the energy and momentum from gathering like-minded individuals driven by the same desire for a fairer world. It’s an opportunity to recharge, build on existing relationships, and perhaps most importantly, to push forward with renewed vigor toward our shared goals.
The Road Beyond the Summit
As the Global Challenges Foundation prepares for this critical Summit, the work doesn’t end with the event’s conclusion. “The Summit is just the beginning,” Anja reminds us. “Following up on the decisions and ensuring their implementation will be crucial. We must also seek out other platforms and processes to continue advancing these vital issues. The journey towards a stable planet and a sustainable climate is far from over.”
