Panelists from right to left: Dr. Malin Mobjörk; head of the SIPRI project on climate and risk, moderator Dan Smith; director of SIPRI, Malini Mehra; ambassador of the Global Challenges Foundation, and Johan Kuylenstierna; executive director of the Stockholm Environment Institute SEI.

Panel discussion on the role of the UN in climate change policy.

The Global Challenges Foundation and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute SIPRI organised the panel debate “Why climate change is an issue for the UN Security Council“. How should the Security Council deal with the policy issues of climate change? The event was held on 19 October 2017 at Medelhavsmuseet (The Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities) in Stockholm.

The panel addressed climate change as a security issue, and whether the UN Security Council is the right forum for handling climate change policy in that light. Other issues discussed were how climate change affects other sorts of conflicts, and which policies are currently developing in the global community.
