Perspectives on UN75 from Independent Experts and Global Civil Society

May 20, 2020

On May 13th Jens Orback and Dr. Magnus Jiborn, respectively Executive Director and Head of Research of the Global Challenges Foundation, participated in Perspectives on UN75 from Independent Experts and Global Civil Society.

The event was hosted by the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in collaboration with the Igarapé Institute, the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy, and Development, the Global Challenges Foundation, the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation, and the Stimson Center.

Present at the virtual dialogue were among others the permanent representatives to the UN of various member states, diplomats, independent experts and representatives from civil society.

In his address to the conference Executive Director Jens Orback stressed:

  1. A broadening of the concept of security, not only addressing armed conflicts, but also climate and environment. The broadening would make them a matter for the UN Security Council.
  2. An opening for a “multi- stakeholder” process where other actors are also invited into the change process.
  3. A pursuit of a stronger rule of law, also at the global level.
