Anote Tong is the former president of Kiribati. During his term of office (2003–2016), he developed the country's commitment to climate change. He is the founder of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, one of the world's largest marine conservation areas that has also been recorded on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2012 he won the leadership prize from the Hillary Institute of International Leadership, in 2012 the Peter Benchley Ocean Award and in 2015 the Sunhak Peace Prize. Anote Tong is Board Member of Conservation International, and Ambassador for the Global Challenges Foundation.
