The Educators' Challenge is a competition created by the Global Challenges Foundation, which seeks innovative approaches to engage students and broader audiences in discussions on the importance and principles of global governance, its history and its potential future. These approaches should provide a basis for continued ideation and discussion on how we can better address the greatest challenges of our time.
Educators of all sorts – teachers in schools and universities, journalists, content creators, PR-professionals, game developers, curators, and influencers – have been encouraged to submit their ideas to the competition as they all have a vital role to play in steering the conversation and increasing knowledge and positive action on better frameworks of global collaboration and global catastrophic risks.
The Educators' Challenge competition opened in November 1st 2017 and ended in June 30th 2018. The evaluation process of the entries has been carried out in the autumn of 2018. Thirteen semi-final jury members from, BBC Earth, Games for Change, Ashoka and EsGlobal, among others, evaluated the initial entries to the competition. Based on these critiques, twelve finalists advanced to the next stage, where the final jury will select up to 10 winners.
Winning prizes of US$5000 will be awarded early 2019 to the most creative and effective proposals progressing pedagogy and audience engagement around the pressing issues that require improved global cooperation.

Dr Maha Hosain Aziz is an NYU professor, blogger and consultant of global risk. But her first dream was to be a cartoonist! After 20 years, she returned to her childhood passion and combined it with her research in global risk, drawing the crowdfunded, award-winning political comic book, The Global Kid. Her debut comic features 14 year old superhero Sami who enlightens the younger reader about the current risks and possible futures of countries globally; he also inspires youth to be more activist to tackle these risks. All sales from the comic book go to youth-focused education non-profits – Developments in Literacy and Global Glimpse.

The UN 2030 Global Goals provide an ideal vehicle for emotionally engaging our youth in reshaping global governance. United Nations Association of Australia - Western Australia (UNAAWA) has developed and implemented a replicable school education template based on the Global Goals and the UNESCO Model for Global Citizenship Education. The seven interwoven elements of the template support teachers from Kindergarten to Year 12 designing learning programs that develop global understandings and empower students to integrate and apply their learning and act collaboratively to achieve a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable world.

Peace Boat’s Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme is an educational programme aimed at capacity building and awareness raising. It was first held in 2017, launched at the United Nations Ocean Conference and recognized by the COP23 Presidency Secretariat as an Endorsed Event of COP23. The programme brings youth leaders from states on the front line of climate change and marine degradation to travel onboard Peace Boat's ship. It has the dual educational purpose of capacity building for the young leaders from small island states and education and awareness raising for the people they engage with during the voyage.

The African Leadership University (ALU) recently launched a fully accredited undergraduate degree in Global Challenges. The ALU employs a learning model called ALU’s Discovery Learning Model in their overall curriculum delivery. They stress generative thinking using a variety of frameworks in order to empower students with the problem-solving mindsets they will need in order to address the global challenges currently threatening our collective future. ALU have combined their Discovery model with the framework of Moonshot thinking in a multi-part workshop to get students to begin to think about how to solve global challenges.

A Global Security System: An Alternative to War (AGSS) is World BEYOND War’s educational blueprint for ending all war through the development of a cooperative, nonviolent system of global governance pursued via three interdependent strategies: demilitarising security, managing conflicts without violence and nurturing cultures of peace. AGSS is complemented by an online study guide that provides guiding questions for discussion and action, and features videos of changemakers actively designing the new system. AGSS is utilized as a learning, planning and organising tool by community groups, schools, universities, and policymakers around the world.

New Shores - A Game for Democracy is an interactive tool to engage youth in tackling the greatest challenges of our century (global collaboration towards sustainable resource management, climate change mitigation and respect for human rights). Unlike traditional lecture-based approaches to education, it offers a playful environment for exploring the complex global systems. The game is available for free, which makes it an easily accessible tool to be used at schools, universities or in informal education contexts. Let’s play fair for our world together!

Engaging the arts and science The Hard Rain Project is a highly original international initiative, harnessing the power of visual media, blending art and science to raise awareness across the spectrum of pressing global issues, but also to stimulate thinking and inspire action towards more positive futures. Hard Rain Project’s exhibitions, books, talks, concerts and events are designed to support young people and old from all walks of life, to take action to bolster the resolve of governments to pass the kind of legislation that underpins security for future generations. And it gets personal. It wants to know what you are going to do now.

You Change It is an interactive card game for high school and college students that simulates economic damages and polluting behavior as they uniquely apply to climate change. In addition to the core ‘externality’ problem, it captures unequal gains, pollution, and damages by income class, and has options for catastrophic risk, a carbon tax, and an equal per-capita dividend policy. This comprehensiveness is made possible by accompanying software that processes playing card choices into outcomes. It is simple to administer, and requires just one computer (for the instructor), a jumbo die, and the original playing cards (6 to 30 players).

HerStory is a youth-led initiative to record the human experiences from a feminist perspective,emphasizing the role of women, and addressing the absence and exclusion of women from historical records over centuries that have minimised the roles women have played in history, politics, science, governance, leadership, and religion. HerStory’s goal is to double the number of Wikipedia articles about gender and empowerment of women and raise awareness about the impact of global risks on women and girls between 2018 and 2020.

Through practicing Social Presencing Theater (SPT), groups can become aware of three bodies: their own, the social body and that of the earth. They perceive both individual and systemic blocks through physical sculptures which move from old to new possibilities. This gives a shared language for reflection and can provide ways for students, citizens, educators and decision-makers to engage in co-sensing the future by discovering inner knowing at a systemic level. This can then support people, groups and whole systems to move from “ego to eco” awareness, and tune into the emerging higher future possibilities of a transformed social field.

The Sustainability Leadership Lab wants to share its educational programme (including models, tools, and experiential training) with the widest possible audience. Specifically, our training toolkit aims at improving collaboration by integrating gamification, systems and design thinking, and leadership development. With this approach, we aim contribute to the reform of local and global institutions by shifting to creative, resilient, and integrative mindsets to make those institutions meaningful. We are excited to leverage interconnectedness and global citizenship through our training for the benefit of global peace, progress, and prosperity!

The world’s global challenges are deeply interconnected and systemic issues. Governing the process of addressing them and developing new solutions requires the next generation to have a better understanding and intuition for interdependent systems than the current generation has.
Over the past decades complexity science has transformed our approach to systems, yet this understanding has largely stayed among experts and academics. It is urgent that students get access to these tools, methods and approaches as they make choices about their own future.
For this purpose we have developed a complexity curriculum and introduced it at several schools around the world.
